Your dogs can pee anywhere in this room full of pet friendly products!
Gross? Maybe. But, seriously — when you have pets, you will have an accident of some sort.
We all want an easier life. With children or without. With pets or without. We dine in front of the TV. We snack during game night. We like drippy pizza, drizzled olive oil, blueberries any way you want them, a big-‘ol carafe of coffee, and working a crossword puzzle in ink pen. No one wants to feel restricted on how they can use the furniture or worry they’ve ruined their sofa or rug after a mustard drip, the oops! ink pen mark, or the bumped glass of red wine. Or – pet urine.
With the home furnishing market’s explosion of “performance furnishings” and impermeable surfaces, you have more options than ever to create friendly, livable, easy care spaces, even with untrained foster dogs.
Pet-friendly products used in this interior design concept:
- Vinyl “hardwood” flooring – Superior to hardwood laminate hands down. More scratch resistant, is less slippery, and at a comparable price point.
- Polypropylene rug – Who wants a rug you can take outside and power wash? I do! I do! Seriously. Read your labels, (there are polypropylene blends you have to be aware of) but many polypropylene rugs can be disinfected with a bleach solution. Score!
- That sexy sectional sofa – is upholstered in a performance fabric. My absolute favorite brand of performance fabric is by Crypton Home. Water repellent, folks. Yep! Pee, coffee, wine – all beads up like water on a freshly waxed automobile and gives you plenty of time to make it to the kitchen and back with a towel to absorb the liquid. Crypton Home fabric is also ODOR REPELLENT. Boom. (insert mind-blowing hand signal)
- The pillow covers and throw are made with performance fabrics, such as those from Sunbrella, another performance fabric company. Stain resistant and washable.
- The coffee table/ottoman is covered in a soft, leather-like vinyl, and the base is stainless steel.
- The side chair has a metal frame, and while the cushions from the company are not covered in a performance fabric – that is an easy custom fix.
ALL of the pet friendly products mentioned above clean up with mild soap and water.
How easy is that!
I’ve been using Crypton fabrics for more than 10 years as the ultimate sofa cover. I bought yards and yards, cut the length I needed for each piece of furniture to cover, and when there’s an accident, nothing soaks through. I just clean up the excess, toss the fabric piece in the washer, line dry it and presto! It goes right back on the furniture.
Performance fabrics are not just for upholstery. We are seeing new performance fabrics described as “drapery weight”: meaning the fabric isn’t too thick or heavy and is easily fabricated into curtains or other window treatments. No more tying your curtains in a bun knot to keep your foster dog from hiking his leg on your bedroom drapery.
I fully expect to see “performance” materials to expand to other products. We already have performance wallpapers, for example! How about performance paint for the interior walls? I think I’ll go chat with my paint guy to see what’s on the horizon!
Next time you need new home furnishing stuff, explore the new pet-friendly products on the market! If you are looking for a particular pet-friendly solution to a home furnishings problem – lemme know. I’ll see if I can help!
